Sustainable City Services

Repair on Wheels

Using the Design Thinking methodology, this project addresses the topic of repair services in the city of Cologne from various transdisciplinary perspectives. The project emerged from collaboration with Repair Cafés, the German waste management company AWB, the city of Cologne and KISD (Köln International School of Design).

Sustainable City Services

Within the framework of the government’s zero waste initiative, this project was driven by in-depth research on repair services, interviewing the stakeholders involved in the issue, including consumers, waste collection services, repairers, and the government.

Product design

Once the topics were determined, I joined the Repair on Wheels team with the goal of bringing repair services to public spaces so that people wouldn’t have to seek out Repair Cafes, but instead, the Repair Cafes would come to them. In the design process, we made sketch explorations, followed by volumetric explorations, scale models, and later digital models with 5 iterations exploring different possible configurations to meet all requirements for functionality, manufacturing, ergonomics, vehicle weight, and transportability.

proof of concept

The functional prototype was finally produced thanks to funding from the City of Cologne’s Strategic Innovation Department, and the concept was evaluated in a real-world context with the participation of the Repair Cafés collective initiative.
